So (2025) illustrated some unique perceptions and experiences of trauma and resilience among Asian American adults. Many of these individuals experienced adverse childhood experiences, such as parental conflicts or domestic violence. In families marked by conflict, children are often subjected to emotional abuse or neglect. There are two types of traumatic experiences in such situations: one is witnessing parents' verbal or physical violence, and the other is experiencing direct abuse toward themselves.
Emotional neglect frequently occurs in families filled with conflict; however, many Asian American adults also report experiencing emotional neglect in families that are less argumentative. In these cases, parents often face economic pressures and live in a survival mode, leaving them with insufficient time to spend with their children.
Two additional common sources of trauma for Asian Americans are immigration stress and political trauma, alongside poverty. Many Asian Americans have experienced political trauma in their home country, which can be a significant factor in their decision to immigrate. The immigration process also adds further stress on top of the political trauma they suffered back home.
